Chicory cultivation is under increasing pressure. From the chicory leafminer and the woolly lettuce aphid to birds. As the pest pressure increases, laws and regulations are becoming increasingly stringent. Pests are a growing threat to chicory cultivation. Because there is still little in-depth knowledge about the factors that influence these pests, targeted research is desperately needed.
Flemish Brabant Agriculture Practice Point has been researching this for over a year.
The goal: to develop sustainable and effective control strategies and to share the knowledge gained with growers.
One of the most striking findings so far is the effectiveness of nets. Not only do they keep birds away, but they also keep unwanted insects at bay. There are countless variants, with different mesh sizes that are nice enough to keep pests out. But how do nets influence the growth, health and yield of chicory plants?
Howitec is actively contributing to this research. We delivered Ornata Light 2.0 at the Flemish Agricultural Practice Point and shared our expertise on application and assembly. The first tests show that the use of our nets has a good effect on chicory leafminers, woolly lettuce aphids and birds. Furthermore, the nets appeared to have no negative influence on the effect of plant protection products. The funds went through the net effortlessly, while fewer weeds grew compared to untreated plots.
In addition, the plants under the nets showed equally good, or even better, growth.
